Teacher's Guide

Troubleshooting and FAQs

This guide addresses common issues that teachers may encounter when using the Coding for Kids platform and provides troubleshooting steps and frequently asked questions.

Technical Issues

Platform Access Problems

Students Can't Log In

Symptoms: Students receive "incorrect username or password" errors.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Verify the username is spelled correctly (including capitalization)
  2. Reset the student's password:
    • Go to Students → Select student → Reset Password
    • Provide the new password to the student
  3. Check if the student is trying to log in from the correct URL
  4. Ensure the student's account is active

Browser Compatibility Issues

Symptoms: Platform features don't work correctly or appear distorted.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Ensure students are using a supported browser:
    • Chrome (recommended)
    • Firefox
    • Edge
    • Safari
  2. Update the browser to the latest version
  3. Clear browser cache and cookies
  4. Disable browser extensions that might interfere

Code Execution Problems

Code Won't Run

Symptoms: Students click "Run" but nothing happens or an error appears.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for syntax errors (missing colons, brackets, quotation marks)
  2. Ensure all code is properly indented (especially important in Python)
  3. Verify the code doesn't have infinite loops
  4. Try refreshing the browser page
  5. Check if the execution environment is overloaded (wait and try again later)

Slow Code Execution

Symptoms: Code takes a long time to run or browser becomes unresponsive.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for inefficient loops or recursion
  2. Look for very large data structures
  3. Close other browser tabs to free up memory
  4. Restart the browser if performance issues persist

Progress Tracking Issues

Progress Not Saving

Symptoms: Students complete levels but progress isn't recorded.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Verify the student is logged in
  2. Check internet connectivity
  3. Ensure the student actually submitted the solution (not just ran the code)
  4. Look for browser storage restrictions or privacy settings
  5. Contact support if the issue persists

Incorrect Progress Tracking

Symptoms: Progress shows as incomplete despite student completing the work.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Have the student re-submit their solution
  2. Check if the solution actually meets all criteria
  3. Review any console errors that might indicate submission problems
  4. Try a different browser

Classroom Management Issues

Student Access Management

Problem: Need to limit certain platform features.

Solution:

  1. Modify class settings:
    • Enable/disable the virtual assistant
    • Control quiz access
    • Manage creative mode availability

  • Chapters 6-7: 3-4 weeks
  • Chapters 8-9: 3-4 weeks

How do I help students who are falling behind?

  1. Identify specific challenges through the progress tracking system
  2. Provide targeted support during independent work time
  3. Consider peer tutoring with advanced students
  4. Use the platform's virtual assistant feature for additional help
  5. Share specific concept resources with struggling students

How can I challenge advanced students?

  1. Direct them to the extension activities in each chapter
  2. Encourage them to attempt multiple solutions to the same problem
  3. Assign mentoring responsibilities to help peers
  4. Provide access to the advanced course content when ready
  5. Create custom challenges that extend platform content

Platform Features

What is the virtual assistant feature?

The virtual assistant provides tailored help to students when they're stuck. It offers hints, explains concepts, and guides problem-solving without giving away solutions. Teachers can control assistant availability and usage limits in class settings.

Can I customize the curriculum order?

While the platform is designed for sequential learning, you can:

  • Adjust your teaching emphasis within each chapter
  • Spend more or less time on specific concepts
  • Incorporate your own examples and applications
  • Use class settings to enable more flexible progression for advanced groups

How do quizzes work on the platform?

Quizzes assess conceptual understanding through multiple-choice and short-answer questions. They:

  • Are available at the end of each chapter
  • Provide immediate feedback to students
  • Generate reports for teachers
  • Can be enabled/disabled in class settings
